Google knows all. It has cast countless billions of HTTP requests into the ether(net) in an effort to compile, cache, categorise and analyse our collective published work ,to, sell ad space. Ask it a question, any question and it'll point you to a usually relevant answer.
But answers depend on questions and some questions defy logic. Yesterday evening google decided that deziddon.com was the best answer for the question: 'karaoke leg'. Yep...you read that right...
karaoke leg?
Sure, it makes a little sense that the transvestite karaoke blog posting would match said query, but who in their right mind would fathom such a question, never mind act on it?
Anyway, after searching the term myself I noted the 'similar pages' link under this sites description, and being nosy (and not having a awful lot of interest in karaoke and its relationship with legs in the first place) I gave it a click...
In Google's order:
What follows are what google believes are pages similar to mine, ranked in the order google returned them...The W3 Validator
Finally - proof I can point to during my fevered attempts to convince all around me I'm a xHTML validation nazi! Tremble random Luas passangers!!!
Istigh Computing...
Ok... a curious connection but it certainly makes sense - went gaming at this fine establishment and had many a good time! But how did google know? Same publishing software? Locality perhaps?
Kentaree Studios
The online home of Pete Vos! A good buddy who I've mention loads in the real world, and sling abuse at from time to time online. Makes sense we'd be somehow connected! In a platonic fashion! Downtown!Tipperary Institute
There's proof in there somewhere that they're not the validation nazis they ought to be...(!) I spent a few days out of about six months at Clonmel's wing of Tipperary Institute. Mostly good people who did their utmost to accommodate my less than mainstream academic approach. Since hitting Dublin I've learned their library staff are very well regarded among their field - I just wish they'd fix their website!!Hcs.ie
Scratching my head on this one! A sister company of FocusMedia, a web development company I used to work for. But I'm not sure how Google is connecting us. I don't link to them, and they don't link to me. I had a quick look around their current website, it's looking well, but it is a shame they've decided to re-write history in the 'about us' section, glossing over some pretty interesting facts and completely omitting the companies real founders. A shame, but a shame I've erected an SEP field around.
Clonmelchat.joeuser.com
??? Your guess are as good as mine! Clonmel maybe ???
Mattrudge.net
IT guru, speccy lover, married man, collector of stuff and things, all round good egg! Nuff said!
StatCounter
A free web counter website. I don't use on-page site stats (they're a bad cast-back to '90s era web dev, and besides, backpage is doing it for me!)... so I've NO IDEA why this is considered related...
Hostingireland.ie
Will's internet hosting company based in Waterford - I pass customers his way from time to time - good people, good service.
.Tk
Another head scratcher here - never used this tld...
Tipperary Central
Tipperary centric web directory. I've been listed here since 2005, but for some reason google thinks I'm related to the "What's New" page...
thisistrue.com
Wow - erm... where do I begin? I dunno! No idea whatsoever...
pro.ie
Wills web design/development hat. Curious connection!
Mattrudge.com
Nothing to do with the aforementioned machine guru. This .com version pimps himself as a comedian, writer, producer and pervert. I don't know anything about him so I won't comment. But if I were to comment ...
Editpad
My texteditor of choice! Yes, I'm one of those sadist developers who despises any form of auto-completion, syntax highlighting, button combo compilation or anything that gets in the way of courier fonted text against a dull grey background - including that new fangled cursor thing! CTRL-S is too much help IMHO! SADIST!! Regardless, I continue to use editpad (it has tabs) =)
WebSTAT
Another free on-page web counter. Another wtf!
Adobe
I use their software. I don't boast about it.
Flickr
I flirted with Flickr some time back but decided to roll my own solution to my picture showing problem. Despite the upward turn of my nose Google has decided to connect me to Matt's flickr stream ... hmmm!
Alrighty then!
Google is obviously working from a much higher plain than this mere mortal. Some connections I can wholeheartedly agree with (I like the idea of being associated with Matt, Kentree, W3, Istigh and editpad). Others I'd completely reject, forcing a random half hearted shake of the fist.
Not Guilty by disassociation
What is more curious are the absences ... what about my (very web established) sexy gramm(e)ar nazi? FullCircle & Lukos? Backpage? Rukkus & Deviant Arts Captain Fast? The CTI in Clonmel? Meteor bashing Fachtna? The countless web projects my name is dashed across?
How long has google's 'similar link' secret sauce been left on the window sill, and is it past its sell-by date?
Dez Iddon was born once and has been trying to keep 'inside-the-lines' and 'join-the-dots' ever since. He can be found playing in Ireland's richer alluvial deposits most days after six...
